Lancaster Priory

A partial view of the Priory Church of St. Mary, founded in 1094 (earliest written record) and built upon a space where a church had existed from 630 AD. There is much of interest inside and around the Priory, physically and contextually. Expect more pictures and commentary in later posts as I get to know it better.

By consulting the church window record, can you tell where this stained glass is located?

  1. Definitely looking forward to your future posts about this church. The architectural details are quite unique, at least to me. Based on the floor plan you linked to, it looks huge too. The stained glass window's gorgeous, and it's right in the middle of the wall on the south side ;)

  2. To me too Hilda, and glad to know you you studied the floor plan. There are so many me photo-worthy artefacts inside the church that I'm looking forward to getting back there, maybe later today since the weather is bad. Thanks.

  7. Thanks for the encouragement Buck and Lois. I'll get up there soon and open up the inside of the church to you - and maybe a larger shot of the outside or at least some detail from another section. Thanks again.

  8. Anything that old has got to be well made by some dedicated craftsmen in many trades. The photos you too are also first quality. Nice post today. I have enjoyed it very much.

  11. Absolutely beautiful and crisp photos. It's hard to imagine to that a structure built in 1000's is still standing. To put things my perspective, the State of Oregon just turned 150 years old this year.

  12. Amazing to me that buildings a thousand (or almost) years ago are still standing yet we in North America pull down buildings not even a century old.

  13. Buildings, especially churches, were built to last in those days! To be fair though, there have been additions and replacements to the structure during that time. There are several distinct types of of material and design throughout. I'll get a shot of the different style of arches used another time.

    Thanks for your input guys.
