House of Lancaster

Divine right?, originally uploaded by Lancaster Today.

Royal coat of arms on the balcony of Lancaster Priory, looking down on the congregation.

The House of Lancaster was a branch of the English royal family, ruling England for more than 60 years under Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI. The Duchy of Lancaster still holds large estates in the city (including Lancaster Castle) which provide a primary source of income for the monarch. The current Duke of Lancaster is Queen Elizabeth II.

Translation of the insriptions (more info by clicking on the links):

DIEU ET MON DROIT = God and my right (motto of British monarch)

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE = Shame on him who thinks evil of it (motto of the Order of the Garter)

  1. I never would have guessed that QEII is a duke. Everything about royalty confuses me. ;-)

  2. Titles such as this one stem from plundered wealth EGTG. The US phrase 'follow the money' is as apt for understanding British royalty as it is in any other context! (Oh yes, and follow the claim to divine rights too... ;-)

  4. Thanks Lois - I'm not particularly happy about the quality of the photo, but unfortunately only shot the one. It doesn't do the object justice at all - oh well, next one will.

  5. Wow. An impressive coat of arms. I enjoyed the post and the translation especially.

Thanks for the visit to my blog.

Pick a Peck of Pixels is my photo blog with a difference -- I am hoping you are the difference. For this blog to be famous and me written about in the Wall Street Journal like I was in the seventies, will require more than a couple of dozen hits a day. If 10,000 visitors leave comments then it is instantly famous and your comments are part of history. Lets Make History.
