Kids day out at Greenlands Farm Village (for adults too...)

Greenlands Farm Village is a fantastic place to take the kids. Even if you don't get a kick from watching them interact with animals and having fun in the play areas, it a great place for us adults too! The cafe serves very good food (we loved the ham, egg and hand-cut chips!), the wine shop allowed us to pick up a bottle of our favourite carmenere, and the farm shop had a surprisingly wide range of foods and other products. To top it off, today they had a Chistmas fair showcasing the work of local artisans. Here are a few quick pics showing a few of the local residents and some of the activities available. I only wish I'd taken pictures of the great food we were served in the cafe. Being a foodie family (well, the other three are), we were pleasantly surprised at how good the fayre was. Clean, tasty and well-presented - we will definitely be back!

Had the pleasure to meet Craig and Julie Walker at The Bay FM advertising event this week. They are part of a team who run Greenlands Farm Village, near Carnforth. They have a Christmas fair happening soon, an event we are now planning to attend. Watch this space for pictures!

Edit: Back from a lovely afternoon at Greenlands Farm Village and what a positive report we have. Details on the next post, but here's a festive image taken from inside the barn that was selling unique gifts from local artisans. It's a decorated branch from ceramist Wyn Abott's stand. So beautiful - I couldn't resist!

Lancaster student needing house next year?

I know someone who can help. Gulam Hassan has eight houses in Lancaster for student rental. Building and maintaining his website - Lancaster Living - I declare an interest in recommending him, but I can also recommend Gulam on a personal level and know he looks after his properties as well as treating his tenants with respect. Lancaster Graduation Photography & Family Portraiture

EWM Photography, recently launched full time, is offering graduation photography next month at Lancaster House Hotel. We will have our portrait studio in the hotel's Dalton Suite throughout Lancaster University Graduation Week and into the weekend.

Don't know if you remember Nygel Harrot and friends from a previous post on this blog? For me, there is something compelling about unsmiling people staring directly at you. It's why I've used this image of them as the header for the new ewm blog.

Incidentally, building that ewm blog yesterday has opened the way for me to resurrect the original purpose of this one. Lancaster images will return to Lancaster Today tomorrow or the day after. "Lancaster today tomorrow or the day after." Hmm... I like that. If only Nygel would stop staring at me, I could it enjoy it more.

p.s. critiques of that new blog are welcomed. Although this blog is sloppy and spontaneous by nature, ultimately that one needs to be more considered.

Lancashire black tie photography

I had the great pleasure of photographing guests at a charity dinner on Saturday evening, at the University of Central Lancashire's inaugural Harris Bursary Ball. Hard work made easy when you meet so many varied and interesting Lancastrians in one evening.

Having set up the background and lights, my first task was to capture two or three shots of each person / couple / group as they arrived. With only a couple of minutes to spend with each of them, I was humbled by their collective good-naturedness, and pleasantly surprised at how much personality can be captured through the eye of a fast lens.

It's hard to choose one image, but this young couple appeared to me thoroughly comfortable in their own skins as well as with each other; that's good enough for me! :-)

Along the picture-postcard streets of Wray village yesterday were dozens - perhaps hundreds, we lost count - of not so scary scarecrows.

No, that isn't a Labour Party candidate's rosette. It's a 1st place prize of some description. Couldn't quite work out how the results were organised as there appeared to be a few first prizes on show (more in later posts). Presumably, there were different categories, but what they were wasn't obvious. There was definitely a detective theme going on though...

Taken at the Wray Village Scarecrow Festival today, May 3 2010. Wray is a several miles from Lancaster, but was stuffed full of Lancastrians today.

The conservative village of Wray couldn't help but show its colours today, with several of the displays lampooning the Prime Minister. Rather disappointing if you ask me...

Islamic school, Lancaster (The Royal Albert aka Jamea Al Kauthar)

The Royal Albert building on Ashton Road, Lancaster. This impressive structure currently houses an Islamic girls' madressah and boarding school, Jamea Al Kauthar. The school caters for 440 girls who study:

"the traditional sciences concurrently with secondary and further education, offer[ing] the 'Tahfeez Ul Quraan' programme (committing the whole quran to memory) and a two year abridged version of the Islamic Teaching programme in the English medium."

I know little about the school beyond what can be found on their website, although it's a building I'd dearly like to visit. I'll contact them and ask for a tour at some point when school is out, perhaps during the summer.

The Queen is Dead: RIP Lancaster Odeon

In a previous post I snapped a shot of the old Regal Cinema (later the Odeon) lying derelict on the main thoroughfare around Lancaster city centre.

Her Majesty has gone completely now, just a crane left standing among a few remaining pieces of rubble. A big, gaping hole in the skyline, soon to be replaced by a block of luxury apartments - or so we've been told.

I managed to capture this last section of the old gal left standing on a dark January evening (24/01/10), the light thrown by my flash and accompanied by more spilling out from the Weatherspoons pub next door. Not sure whether the wreckers ran out of time at the end of the day or if they deliberately preserved this temporary monument. Either way, the Regal's last gasp was captured.

The Custom House, Lancaster Quay, built in 1765 and restored as Lancaster Maritime Museum in 1985.

The building has played a role in Lancaster's slave trade history, both as the place where merchants taxes would have been paid during that period, and today as a place where those links are presented for discussion.

Today's Saturday outdoor market in Lancaster's city centre was a themed day - Edwardian Market, Lancaster Unlocked.

The markets were even busier than usual, with traders and other locals dressed for the part. From my perspective, it was a welcome opportunity to capture a series of portraits. There had always been a plan to do something on the markets, but today was a gifted opportunity to highlight some of the characters who make them happen. The two gents above run stalls selling French breads and fruit and veg, and the lovely couple below run the second-hand book stall. Don't they all look the part? Sunderland Point: Bench, House, Groin (or Groyne...)

After writing all day for other purposes, it's hard to motivate myself to tell you anything more about Sunderland Point. But did I tell already that it is cut off by the tide twice a day?

What makes it special is crossing the road to the island-no-more just as the water drops below the tarmac. The road is awash with mud, and the marshy banks alongside are broken by huge pools of water rushing out with the fast-moving tide. That's really special to see, and I'll try to capture it for you next time we go there just after high-tide.

Until then, here is the last of the views of that area which the causeway road takes you to: A bench (above), a house and an old wooden groin.

Took Yumiko, Yasmin & Caolan to Sunderland Point today (after Caolan's birthday party, I might add - happy 8th birthday, little man). They looked around and liked what they saw.

On a beautiful day, we took the long way round to Sambo's grave, passing cows on the beach and much else besides (more tomorrow about that). Once there, Yasmin and Caolan took one look at the 'mushroom' tribute stones and sped the few steps back to the beach to collect some stones of their own. A few quick trips back and forth later, and here is their result:

There are often fascinating places on our doorstep which we don't take the time to explore. Perhaps it's because they are so close that we don't make the effort? They are not 'exotic' enough - something like that?

Anyway, I set out to Sunderland Point yesterday to see what it was all about, and, particularly, to visit Sambo's grave. Sambo? Who is Sambo? Surely you've heard of him, educated reader? But just in case you haven't, let me show off my newly-acquired knowledge to save you from your ignorance.

Sambo's grave is a memorial to a young, black slave who is believed to have arrived at the port in Sunderland Point by ship in 1736. He was an African stolen into slavery and first brought to the West Indies before beginning the long journey to Lancaster with his master. Unfortunately for Sambo (as if his life was not tragic enough), shortly after arrival he was taken ill and died near a local inn. Perhaps his immune system was not prepared for the infections carried by the North West Englanders?

Sambo was buried in an unmarked grave, until, in 1795, a certain Rev Watson led an effort to have a memorial erected. It is believed that this teacher penned the following elegy found on the grave:

Full sixty years the angry winter's wave

Has thundering dashed this bleak and barren shore

Since Sambo's head laid in this lonely grave

Lies still and ne'er will hear their turmoil more.

Full many a sandbird chirps upon the sod,

And many a moonlight elfin round him trips

Full many a summer's sunbeam warms the clod

And many a teeming cloud upon him drips.

But still he sleeps - till the awakening sounds,

Of the Archangel's trump new life impart,

Then the Great Judge his approbation founds,

Not on man's colour but his worth of heart.

In the picture below, you'll see that people lay little gifts and stones with messages on them beside the grave. Perhaps it's the overwhelming sense of guilt we should rightly feel that prompts people to pay homage to this single African slave? Or perhaps it's just the love of a sentimental story that pushes these little showings of affection and compassion for a boy who died so long ago. Whatever individual reasons people have for visiting and caring for Sambo's grave, they've prompted my own small scream of indignation into the wind at Sunderland Point.

More tomorrow about the wondrous place that is Sunderland Point. I have much to share about it, but refuse to spoil Sambo's post with such mundaneness tonight. But if you have any interest in reading more about Lancaster's links with the Slave trade, see my previous post on William Lindow.

Every Tuesday, the council workers come to clear our street's rubbish. I've watched them work a few times and respect their no-nonsense approach to getting the job done. It looks like a hard graft, but they take their job seriously and do it well, and just like today, most of them are quick to smile and say hello. Good men.

More from yesterday's hike. Do you see Derwent Water? Well, just in front of it you might be able to make out the town of Keswick. That's where we parked and began walking.

So that's where we started from. The next photo is where we went, taken from the halfwayish point. Looking up that path to Skiddaw still makes my legs sing. Yasmin (11) and Caolan (7) did really well on their first real walk - five hours is hard on the legs, especially when you are ... ahem ... a little bit older than that.

Oh, it hurt. So much so that sometimes you just had to feign interest in an old bit of collasped wall in order to rest your weary legs. "Kids, this wall needs to be photographed while lying on my back. It's a special type of shot that takes ten minutes to process. I would not lie to you."

After a long day hiking in the Lake District, I have a set of images for you. Too tired to show them now, so this memorial on Lonscale Fell half way to the summit of Skiddaw will have to do for now. It is dedicated to the shepherding family of Hawell. The inscription opens with "In loving memory of two Skiddaw shepherds." Google for more info if needed!

Woke up early but the light was bad and the sky grey and overcast. Undeterred, I plodded up to Williamson Park to take a few shots of the Aston Memorial, Lancaster's 'famous folly'. Fortunately, the park warden was kind enough to invite me inside to take more.

It was an unexpected pleasure to have the place all to myself - I only wish the natural light had been better or I had brought a flash with me. But perhaps I'll return another Sunday at the same time, now that I've befriended the man with the key!

Took some shots early this morning as traders were setting up their stalls for the regular Saturday market in town. Talked with Alvin again at his display when I was finished and took a few pictures of his work. Alvin is a local pottery artist, producing thrown and hand-painted ceramics and tableware. I'll tell you more about him and his art in a later post, along with photos of the man himself. In the meantime, you can find out more about his work here, including a photo of Alvin which I promise to beat in that later post!

p.s. In the top picture, it is a price label on the far side of the rim, not a flaw in the work or the photo. And apologies for cropping the handle on the second photo. It was beyond my control. :)

It pays to wake up early. Got some great wildlife shots today between 6-7am. I'll post a couple more of them over the next few days.

This beauty was patiently waiting for fish on the towpath side of the canal. I was lucky to get a few shots before s/he flew off to take up a place on the pathless side, the usual waiting area when people are around. But before that, she seemed to have caught sight of prey as the photo below shows. Or perhaps this is just her usual take-off posture..?

A wedding was in progress at The Midland Hotel, and I shot the best man and other friends of the groom. Took my camera out of the violin case and just shot them. Sprayed them with shutter releases. It was a dirty job, but someone had to do it.

The summer holidays are fast running out, so we made the short journey to Morecambe Beach, about three miles from the house. Despite the approaching autumn chill, August = beach for us (even if nobody else in Morecambe & Lancaster seems to agree).

But who needs people when you have a log for company? And with buckets and spades, why that adds up to a perfect summer day!

The third photo was taken earlier in the summer: same subjects, same location, same activity - but taken by my partner on her LG Renoir phone. It's a far superior photo of Yasmin & Caolan :(

Ok, so I've hiked up the vibrancy on this photo (if you look closely, the drain-pipe is a little too blue), and I might be accused of plagiarism if you know PJ's 'Daily Dublin Photo Blog' (check it out, it deserve more attention), but I still think there is something interesting about this subject.

The story behind this photo is that I walked down a quiet city centre side street - more of a lane actually - in order to get a photo of the fire brigade's practice tower which was peeping over the top of a wall adjacent to this gate. The gate sits alongside the back entrance to the Lancaster Fire & Rescue Service, which you can see in this photo. I guess the fire engines might occasionally be taken out through this back exit.

Went for a walk with the kids this evening and had the pleasure of meeting Barry & June and their grandson Harry, aged 6. They have been in Lancaster for a few nights and plan to stay a couple more before heading up to Hest Bank.

Barry and June have lived full-time on Margaret Rose since retiring a couple of years ago. They love their new lifestyle, despite the odd compromise it entails. Confined spaces can sometimes lead to a bit of squabbling, they confided, but everyone looked happy and relaxed this evening!

Just before this, we met Jacqueline and Len on The Owl & The Pussycat who graciously agreed to have their photo taken. Perhaps we'll see them again tomorrow evening and find out a little more about their experiences living on a narrow-boat. Thanks to them all!

It's a dark night on Lancaster Canal, and the area closest to the city centre is full of moored narrow boats. It's August and the 'boat people' are out in force, having travelled far and wide along the canal network. It seems some have even come from other continents.

... but for those of you who loathe squinting at dark photos, here's one I took over the weekend. This little blighter just stood there staring, hardly moving. It was amazing, I tell you! He was practically tame!

Popped into Aurora Tattoo today, who were gracious enough to let me hang around and snap while David had work done to his upper body by Iain. David didn't grimace once, and neither did Iain. But I did. Twice.

There was strong natural light coming through the large full windows just behind David's back, which undoubtedly produced a good working environment for Iain. It didn't help the photography though.

River Lune salmon

A wild River Lune salmon, proudly held aloft by Jamie of Shaw's fishmongers in Lancaster Market.

Jamie explained that this wild salmon had been caught under licence near Sunderland Point on the mouth of the River Lune. You'll notice the tag: As soon as the salmon is caught, it must be tagged and recorded by the licensed fisherman, and then again on arrival at the fishmongers. Strict controls are in place by the Environment Agency, and records of all salmon caught and sold must be matched against quotas imposed by them.

There are a limited number of licences available and Jamie confirmed there is no guarantee of a regular catch, mainly because the salmon must be caught using traditional funnel nets. Jamie, Fred and a knowledgeable customer also pointed out that these licensees catch the salmon more for love than money - they know of fishermen who have lost money over the course of the season.

Jamie took this salmon from the refridgerated storage, where it was waiting to be 'worked on' by Jamie, Fred and Kev tomorrow or Saturday morning. Because it is caught locally and brought straight to the mongers, the salmon must be left to rest for at least 24 hours until the rigor mortis has eased. Until this time, it is still too stiff to do anything with.

It was a pleasure talking with Jamie and Fred, and I hope I have done justice to the knowledge they were happy to share with me. The eagle's head is from the church lectern. You can see the full piece in this photo on the Priory's homepage, where you'll also read that the lectern was presented to the Priory by E.G. Paley in 1870. (Edward Pale was a Lancaster architect - you can see his Wiki profile here).

The photo below shows a partial view of a large modern statue of Mary situated at the back of the church. My guess is that it is the most recent artistic addition to the priory's collection, but will have to confirm this after the next visit the priory - a good excuse to take more photos.

Neighbours. They support us and lend a shoulder to lean upon when tired. Also handy when you run out of sugar, or, in the case of this house, when you need a pint at the end of a long day on your feet.

Lancaster is full of old buildings, many of which suggest today that planners in Georgian and Victorian times didn't pay as much attention to issues of subsidence as they might have done. But they designed damn fine windows, eh?

What's a weind?

You don't know what a weind is, do you? It was a unknown word to me until yesterday.

It started at a shop in Garstang - a small market town near Lancaster -when we asked for directions to a local tea house:

Her: "Take the second weind on the left, and you'll find a good one."
Me : "What's a weind?!"
Her: "erm... I don't really know. It's just what we call them."

We decided not to ask the obvious question, but to find out for ourselves. Have you guessed it yet? I haven't tracked down the etymology of 'weind' or even the subtle details behind its meaning and use, but it seems a weind is a passageway of some description. And a Google search suggests the word is confined to this general area. They are mentioned here in a document titled A Short History of Garstang.

Postscript 1: The beauty of not being 'born and bred' in Lancashire is regularly coming across new words as well as places. One thing yesterday's discovery taught me was that there were obviously a lot of alleyways in this part of the medieval world. I base this assertion on only recently having added another new word to my linguistic repertoire for them - ginnel.

Postscript 2: Before anyone asks, I have no idea who Thomas was. Regrettfully, it didn't occur to me to ask someone at the time.

Moorside Primary School's favourite lollipop man, Ray Bateson. Ray will be retiring in October this year unless he can have the age limit of 75 overturned.

To pupils at Moorside, Ray is a constant and much-loved part of their school life. Rain or shine, he gives them a hearty welcome and an enthusiastic goodbye as he guides them across the road at each end of their school day.

News spread fast that Ray will be retiring, and he was showered with gifts on the last day of school yesterday. But it was great to find him on his usual patch again this morning, helping another late-finishing school's pupils safely negotiate traffic on Bowerham Road. It was quieter than usual today without the Moorside kids, but Ray was greeted by nearly every passing motorist and pedestrian as we chatted. He collected another carefully-wrapped present and shared friendly words and waves with all those around him. Even his son swapped some breathless banter as he jogged past in the rain while Ray and I sheltered under a tree!

But don't take my word that Ray is the man I paint him to be. He was voted school crossing patrol of the year by all those who appreciate his efforts and respect him. The following extract is from the Lancashire government newsletter that announced Ray's award (also an article from the Lancaster Guardian with more detail about Ray here):

Lollipop man Ray Bateson of Moorside Primary School, Lancaster, won the award for school crossing patrol of the year. “He got so many nominations from the children and parents,” said one teacher at Moorside. “They all adore him because he’s so cheerful and chatty.” The pupils also wrote their own nominations explaining why they thought Ray should be the winner. One simply said: “We love him!”

Our daughter and her friend threw a disco party to celebrate their shared 11th birthday on July 19th. They invited their classmates who had something else to celebrate along with them: Tomorrow they march bravely out of their primary school gates together for the final time. I wonder what emotions will be on display then..?

Came across this car when we were out for a Sunday drive today. I had my camera-phone out and was taking a picture when it's owner came along.

Bob was more than happy to tell me all about his kit car, which he built himself. What I can remember is that he wanted to get "Big Bob" as a personalised number plate, but that would have been just too expensive! The House of Lancaster was a branch of the English royal family, ruling England for more than 60 years under Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI. The Duchy of Lancaster still holds large estates in the city (including Lancaster Castle) which provide a primary source of income for the monarch. The current Duke of Lancaster is Queen Elizabeth II.

William Lindow

William Lindow was buried in the Rawlinson family grave, pictured above, in the north-west corner of Lancaster Priory churchyard (next to Lancaster Castle). By marrying Abigail Rawlinson, William - a sea captain for the family - joined Lancaster's principal merchant dynasty in the late 18th/early 19th century. (Inscriptions on the grave detailed here - see entry 435 under Rawlinson, Henry).

The Rawlinson family ships were involved in the slave trade, departing from Lancaster to trade slaves between islands in the West Indies and transport the fruits of slave labour. The slave trade's contribution to the fortunes of families like the Lindows and the Rawlinsons is the subject of Melinda Elder's book The Slave Trade and the Economic Development of 18th Century Lancaster.

According to Global Links' notes on their Lancaster Slave Trade town Trail , William and Abigail had a black servant - probably a slave - called John Chance who worked at their home in Queen Square. The home that 'John' served now houses a doctor's surgery and can be seen in this photo.

In reference to yesterday's post, it seems likely that William Lindow once owned the land now occupied by that area where his name is prominent on street signs. If you view the street map here, you can see the proximity of Lindow Square / Street to their house on Queen Street. I will verify this when I can.

So help work this out: Which flat numbers are not in this little compound on Lindow Street, Lancaster? Is it just me or do those squiggly lines* confuse the issue? And please, don't make a snap decision on this one. Look carefully, and then look again. Twice. It may not be infinite, but surely the possibilities expand on each reading?
